HMV – SECOND DECK – APPLYING RESEARCH, INITIAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT

Truth be told I struggled a fair bit. I didn’t really know where to begin. I was still indecisive about how to apply colour psychology into the new categorisation. I knew I wanted to create different saturations ( THE HUES ) but I was unsure wether to create completely ‘new genres and categories’ based on colour psychology or wether to link colours to already existing genres.

I needed to start somewhere and this decision was proving to be difficult. At this point I still had to further research into this before making a decision. This decision reminded me of exams and tests, when there is a difficult question and you are stuck. Our teachers would always tell us to skip the question and carry on with the test. You shouldn’t spend too much time on one question as you will run out of time and end up getting no points. Just move on and once all other questions are answered return to the difficult one. So this is what I’ve done. I began producing work, with no specific categories but the application of colour and colour psychology.

DECK FOR FEEDBACK SESSION

For this session we were required to present a more detailed deck showing our research, concept / theme and initial ideas for the work we will be producing. Below each slide I attached a brief explanation and feedback I received from Ansel.

This slide shows the colours that will be used and the different shades.

Ansel seemed to really like this slide and the direction my concept and ideas were heading. It was great to see / hear that as this was only the first slide.

NOTE: I was inspired by a swatch layout I have seen in GF Smith in the first year to produce and present the colours in this form / layout

This slide explains the psychological primates
Further explaining research

My research and the way information is laid out all in all got a positive feedback, however Ansel pointed out that the pink slide just above is not necessarily relevant to be featured. It shows my research and that is great but in the final it won’t necessarily be needed. Also he liked the way I expressed motion through geometric patterns but suggested this idea / method to be pushed further so it will be more communicative.

The Hues

Again, research and knowledge was appreciated, the layout needed some work and the test to be shortened.

COVER

‘Should be the cover / first slide’ I was told. I can understand why. Again Ansel liked the direction of this but suggested the colours should ‘burst’ and see movement through colour and pattern. The HMV logo could be removed as its not relevant. The greatest thing was he really really liked the ‘slogan’ for my concept: ‘THE COLOURFUL SOUND’. I would even go as far that he was impressed with how catchiness and accuracy of that line.

Experiments and template for web layout/content

Ansel found this interesting. Should be worked out better and more.

Examples of how each colour category is going to be displayed (web). Each colour will have a ‘quote / description’ of what it represents and further information and explanation can be explored as well as artists/genre who belong to that category

Ansel liked the examples. That I picked 3 colours and featured them.

NOTE: this gave the idea and the notion to later on pick 2-3 artists, feature them within the new colour categorisation and present that in my final. So pick a few instead of trying to feature all colours.

Close up of web search / colour category browser

Ansel like the movement that the colours and patterns express, but he was pushing me to further explore this. He recommended to look at Tycho and other artists who use colour and movement to express their music.

Close up of colour category

These slides needed a lot of work. As they are here are not that relevant and communicative.

For the interior I was planning to apply geometric pattern as well as colour psychology

‘Don’t just plan doing pattern and colour movement…do it!’

Signage would appear on the floor as well as on the walls. The idea was that each coloured line painted on the floor would lead to the section where ‘the colour in question lives’

‘Think of a way to express the signage better. A wall to wall design on the floor, bigger blocks would look better’

Moodpboard for the interior

Ansel liked my moodpboard and saw the connection between the minimal pattern I have produced so far and the lines / stripes on the walls of the interiors within my moodboard.

All in all I received very helpful and positive feedback. I knew I had to work on things and push the boundaries and I was ready to put the work in…I want to do well!
